About & The Rysdon Legacy

A camp named in honor of a family whose roots in this community run over a century deep — and whose belief in the next generation never wavered.

Who We Are

Rysdon Ranch Camp, in partnership with the YMCA Leif Erickson, offers kids a unique chance to experience life at the HiRoad Ranch. This is not just a horse camp — it's a full ranch experience. Campers spend their days caring for horses, donkeys, goats, and chickens while learning what it takes to be part of the daily rhythm of ranch life.

While horses are a big part of camp, we take a thoughtful, hands-on approach. Campers have a horse-related activity every single day, building skills step-by-step — learning horse behavior, anatomy, grooming, tack, and overall care — before getting into the saddle in the second week. This helps them develop confidence, understanding, and respect, so when they do ride, they're truly prepared.

Alongside horsemanship, campers take part in animal care, introductory agriculture, and daily ranch responsibilities that build problem-solving skills, teamwork, and leadership. They'll gain real-life experience, grow in confidence, and form meaningful connections with animals, each other, and the outdoors.

As our first year, we're excited to lay the foundation for something special. Our goal is to grow Rysdon Ranch Camp each year — expanding opportunities, deepening skills, and giving returning campers the chance to continue building their abilities, including more advanced horsemanship as they progress.

Mission & Values

Our Mission

To build confidence, responsibility, and character through hands-on animal care and teamwork. As we grow, we aim to offer returning campers deeper learning and advanced horsemanship.

Our goal is not only to give kids an incredible two weeks — it's to build a program that grows with them, creating a path from first-time Wrangler all the way to Junior Counselor.

Education

Practical life skills — feeding, grooming, habitat maintenance — transform chores into lessons on accountability and empathy.

Confidence

Leading an animal or maintaining a stall proves to kids they are capable of handling challenges and caring for something greater than themselves.

Community

Working together on farm challenges forms deep bonds through collective contribution to the land and to each other.

The Program Home

HiRoad Ranch & Triple R Enterprise

Rysdon Ranch Camp is a program of HiRoad Ranch, operated by Triple R Enterprise. The ranch is home to horses, a mini pony, donkeys, goats, and chickens — every animal campers will meet, study, and care for during their two weeks.

The HiRoad mission is simple: give kids access to hands-on, meaningful work that builds character. Not screen time. Not passive learning. Real work, real animals, real consequences — in the best possible way.

When a camper learns that their daily consistency directly impacts the well-being of a living creature, something shifts in them. That shift is what we're after.

The Rysdon Family Legacy

The Rysdon family has called Sioux Falls home for over a century. What Charles Rysdon started in a small horse barn in 1918 became one of South Dakota's most respected family businesses — and a family that has given back to this community in equal measure to everything it built.

The Beginning

A Horse Barn. A Dream. A Century of Work.

In 1918, Charles Rysdon founded Sioux Steel Company in a small horse barn in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Over five generations, it grew into a company whose products provide solutions throughout the world.

It is fitting, then, that a camp named in their honor begins in a barn. Just like it all started.

The Connection to This Camp

Decades of Service to Young People

The Rysdon family has donated countless hours to the YMCA Leif Erickson over many decades. Their commitment to building programs that give kids meaningful, character-shaping experiences is the very reason this camp exists. It was dedicated in their honor, and given their name, as a tribute to everything they have poured into this community.

"When you walk through the gates of Rysdon Ranch Camp, you are walking into a legacy built by people who believed in the power of giving their time to something bigger than themselves."
